What is Amber?

What is Amber?

In the 70’s, two hippies named Michael and Barbara named me Amber, after the beautiful stone that was wildly popular at the time. I’ve always been proud of the meaning of my name, “precious gemstone”. I had no idea that some day I would fall in love with the stone, and that I would become an amber jewelry designer. Fossilized Tree Resin

Amber is fossilized resin, which comes from ancient trees. When trees get cuts and breaks, it excludes resin. When this substance is released from the tree, within time it starts to harden. Debri such as seeds, leaves, feathers, and insects get trapped in the resin. In most cases, resin falls into the ground and stays buried near the base of the tree where it hardens for many years
Copal vs. Amber

Copal vs. Amber

If this resin is younger than two thousand years, it is quite commonly referred to as copal. Copal is quite similar to true amber; however it is still soft and not fully fossilized. We use true amber and not copal. Even though copal turns into amber over time, the process takes thousands of years.
